Max - Original 6 by 6 Inch Abstracted Pet Portrait by Colorado Artist Carol Hein

Max was a sweet Bearded Collie mix that I rescued from a Denver pound.  He was a best friend for 14 wonderful years, moving from Colorado to Connecticut and back to Colorado with me.

Since posting "Finn" last week, I have had a number of inquiries about commissions.  I would be happy to paint your best friend.  These little abstracted pet portraits are 6 X 6 are painted in oil on panel and are priced at $50 plus shipping.  Larger sizes are ok too but will cost more depending on the size.

Send me an email and lets discuss the possibilities!

I saw this house along the Connecticut River on a hot and humid day.  The water and shade looked so cool and inviting that I just had to paint the scene!

"Finn" - Abstracted Collie Study by Colorado Artist Carol Hein

Finn, my six month old collie is a real imp.  You can see the mischievousness in his expression.  This small study was done so that I could assess whether or not to attempt painting it on a 24 X 24 canvas.  First I'll need to paint a study of Tank, my huge chocolate lab-couch potato because I'd like their final portraits to hang side by side.

Rockport Harbor #2 8 by 10 inch Original Oil Painting by Colorado Artist Carol Hein

Rockport Harbor #2, 8 X 10 Inch Original Oil Painting by Colorado Artist Carol Hein I read an article recently about painting without the use of solvents. It caught my attention because even odorless mineral spirits can be harmful to an artist's health. The technique calls for combining either chalk dust or marble dust and an oil such as stand oil, walnut oil or linseed oil. The medium lightens the paint without the use of white so the resulting colors are more translucent. Brushes can be cleaned in oil. Drying time is longer so I am working on multiple paintings at one time. Tell me what you think by commenting on my blog. Faith 1 - 6 Inch by 6 Inch Original Abstract Oil Painting

Faith 1, 6 inch by 6 inch original abstract oil painting by Colorado artist Carol Hein. $65 plus taxes and shipping. With all of the chaos in the world I sometimes forget that God is in His heaven. Yet when I paint abstracts I subconsciously gravitate to a cross in the composition. Must be subliminal so I am giving into it and celebrating faith in a loving and ever present Lord. City by the Bay - 6 Inch by 6 Inch Original Abstract Oil Painting

City by the Bay - 6 inch by 6 inch original abstract oil painting by Colorado Artist Carol Hein. $65 unframed plus tax and shipping. Life just exploded and I haven't posted in months. A beautiful little grand daughter was born, friends fighting cancer needed help, Tank, my chocolate lab went back to "good dog school" to earn his Canine Good Citizen designation and I resumed classed at the Art Student's League of Denver. My right hand is about 90% back to full functionality after reconstructive surgery in March. I am now painting every day for at least 3 hours. Small abstracts are completed at the end of each day using left over paint. To purchase contact Carol at carolhein@sbcglobal.net Visit my website carolhein.com

Wildfire, LEFT HAND CHALLENGE, 9 by 12 Inch Original Oil Painting by Colorado Artist Carol Hein

Wildfire, LEFT HAND CHALLENGE, 9 by 12 Inch Original Oil painting by Colorado Artist Carol Hein $150 unframed includes taxes and shipping costs. Painted with a brush and pallet knife. We haven't had much moisture in the Rocky Mountain West this Spring. The wildfire danger is very high so I am sending a big thank you to all of the men and women who fight these monster fires throughout the country. I am still enjoying creating abstract works with my left hand and have signed up for a Carol Nelson workshop later this year. Garden of the Gods Study, RIGHT HANDED CHALLENGE, 5 by 7 Inch Original Oil Painting

Garden of the Gods Study, RIGHT HANDED CHALLENGE, 5 by 7 Inch Original Oil Painting As many of you know, I am recovering from reconstructive hand surgery and have not painted with my right hand since February. This was my first attempt. My hand tires quickly and the brush doesn't always go where it's supposed to go. Oh well - one day at a time! You can buy this painting unframed for $75. Rehab has begun!

No pictures to post today and probably not for the next few months. Rehab started this past Tuesday. I'll be going 3 times a week for 6 weeks and doing 10 sessions myself at home each day. Each session lasts about half an hour so this is pretty much a full time job. The goal by the end of next week is to teach myself to hold a fork and eat small portions (no cutting anything up yet). Because my right hand has been inactive my right shoulder has "frozen" so there are exercises and rehab activities for that as well. It hurts like the devil but at least I can begin to see light at the end of the tunnel. Thanks to you all for your well wishes!

Malibu Cliffs, LEFT HANDED CHALLENGE, 6 by 6 inch original abstract painting by Colorado artist Carol Hein

Malibu Cliffs, 6 by 6 inches original acrylic and pallet knife painting, LEFT HAND CHALLENGE $60 unframed - free shipping. The last time I visited my daughter in California we hiked a beautiful stretch of the Pacific coastline. The cliffs above Malibu were beautiful. Awakening City, LEFT HANDED CHALLENGE, 6 by 6 inch Original Acrylic Abstract Painting by Colorado Artist Carol Hein

Awakening City, LEFT HANDED CHALLENGE, 6 by 6 inch original acrylic on board $50 unframed plus shipping This is the second cityscape in the LEFT HANDED PAINTING CHALLENGE. Working in a new medium, acrylic, with new tools - pallet knives instead of brushes, and only with my left hand has been both frustrating and liberating at the same time. Abstracted Cityscape, LEFT HANDED CHALLENGE, 6" by 6" original acrylic painting by Colorado artist Carol Hein

Abstracted Cityscape, 6 inches by 6 inches, acrylic on panel - left handed painting Week one is behind me. The mega cast comes off next week and then I will be fitted with smaller casts as we go forward. The family of painters at Colorado Daily Painters and CFAI will understand the frustration that comes from being unable to paint on a daily basis. Since I always wanted to try acrylics and abstract works thought I'd give it a whirl while my right hand is disabled. Abstract work is challenging (so is typing) and I prefer oils but have to admit that this 'left hand challenge" is fun. $50 unframed. OUCH Thank Goodness for Family and Friends! Colorado Artist Carol Hein

Had thumb joint replacement surgery on Monday. Yep, it's my right hand. No painting allowed for 2 months - six month recovery period. Already going stir crazy. When this mega cast comes off maybe I can paint with my left hand??? Thank goodness for family and friends. They have brought so much food to me that I had to order a chest freezer from Home Depot. ;0) This is my studio and you can see a partially finished painting on the easel. Stay tuned for updates. carolhein@sbcglobal.net Visit my website carolhein.com

Set for the Day, Seascape, Beach Paintings, Colorado Artist Carol Hein

Set For The Day, 8 by 8 inch original oil painting - $300 unframed. Well, I am behind again. I have four paintings out at various shows and am trying to get some new work ready for a March edition of Southwest Art Magazine. Started a semester of study with Kim English. The first class was a blast! We did 30 paintings; all five minute studies working with a model. When the timer buzzed, the model changed her pose, painters wiped down their canvases, the timer was reset and painters were expected to capture the next pose and background within five minutes. Buzz, wipe, pose, paint.... Loved it! Totally different from my snail's pace painting style. To purchase contact Carol at carolhein@sbcglobal.net Visit my website carolhein.com
